Four years ago, she was walking the halls of GHS and hoping she wouldn't have to go to the tardy station.  Now, she is sending students there as part of her teaching responsibilities.  Graduating in 2003, Ms. Monika Stewart has become one of the faculty.

"My family is in Greenville and its easier to start teaching in a place you are familiar.  I also wanted to improve the GHS art program," said Stewart, as she explained her reasons for returning to her alma mater.

It was a busy four years at Texas A&M-Commerce, as she didn't graduate from GHS with any college credit.  She emphasizes she didn't take any time off and went straight to work for her degree.

"Don't take any time off from your education, you get finished quicker and you can start working at the job you love and get scholarships," said Stewart.

"The TAKS scores do matter, they determine whether you take remedial courses at college," she said.

Stewart's love of teaching extends past the art room, as she volunteered to coach the cross-country team.  She is also helping with the girl's softball teams.

"I used to play softball for GHS and I want to see the cross-country team become a larger program," said Stewart.

Enthusiastic about her teaching career and showing great interest in the student body keep this new teacher motivated.
