New Twist to Learning
October 29, 2007
Bringing the
Civil War era to life, Nancy Brantley, a re-enactor, took
time to present the Academic Decathlon class a close look
at history, while wearing authentic era clothes.
Brantley, a GISD
music instructor, has been involved in Civil War
re-enactments for the past twelve years. Her
knowledge of the era, her clothing and her ability to give
insight into the material the class will need for
competition has been a valuable learning tool for the
team.
The Academic
Decathlon competition is comprised of ten events.
There are seven multiple-choice exams, the Super Quiz
event with oral and written portions and finally a speech
event, as well as an interview. The theme for this
year's competition is the Civil War, with all tests
covering the era.
The team of high
school students must meet certain academic requirements,
with nine students each bringing their own unique
educational gift to the team. The team has 3 "A" or
Honor students, 3 "B" or Scholastic students, and 3 "C" or
Varsity students.
GHS returns to
the Academic Decathlon competition this year with Mrs.
Janice Martin coaching the group. Previous GHS teams
have earned regional honors with the exams and the Super
Quiz events.
