EAC Enriches English Studies
December 3, 2009

The goal of the English Appreciation Club is to help high school students better understand and enjoy English studies through fun activities such as book clubs and volunteer work.  It has the potential to get kids more interested in reading, and so far it has been working.  Through the reading groups, students are getting more involved with reading and are actually enjoying what they're doing.

There are currently seven book clubs, including the 9th and 10th grade required reading groups, which help students with books assigned to their grade level.  Sophomores who read the books the year before are now helping their freshmen counterparts stumble through works like the Greek tragedy "Agamemnon" and "Medea".

"It's essentially students helping students," said Mr. Myer, organization sponsor.  "It's really just kids reading and hanging out."

Soon, these kids will be hanging out at the library, helping the workers there by shelving books and reading to children.

The EAC is improving the student body by stressing the importance of literature in a casual setting where students feel comfortable discussing books they enjoy.  It is also helping the community through the volunteer work at the library, and is continuing to provide a social connection between students and an opportunity for them to help improve their town.

The EAC is always open to new members, so if you are interested in joining, talk to Mr. Myer in Room 2006, located in the English hall.
