DI Teams Headed to State
March 8, 2010

Two teams from Greenville High School will soon be heading to the Destination ImagiNation (DI) state competition.

DI is an international organization for students from kindergarten to 12th grade, along with college students and community groups, that teaches life skills and seeks to expand the imagination through creative problem solving.

The competition emphasizes creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, brainstorming, budgeting, project management, creative and critical thinking skills and presentation skills.

GHS's Hybrid and Structure teams earned the right to attend the April DI state meet in Carrollton/Farmers Branch by placing in the East Regional tournament, held this past weekend in Mesquite.

The two teams were among the 150-plus teams that competed in the regional meet.  Also competing and earning second place finishes were the GHS Performance and Improv teams.

In addition, the Performance team received the Renaissance Award, one of seven special awards presented at the meet, and GHS senior Heather Johnson received the DI Alumni Scholarship.

The strong showing at the regional competition continues GHS's tradition of strong DI performances, which dates back to the days when the competition was called "Odyssey of the Mind."

Greenville teams annually compete in local, regional, state and global competitions and several teams have brought home world titles.

The GHS Hybrid team includes students Devon Johnson, Hannah Johnson, Heather Johnson, Monica Malone, Austin Minick and Cierra Williams and coaches JoAnn Hall, John Underhill and Catherine Hall.

Members of the GHS Structure team include students Tyler King, Sarah Perkins, Nathan Royall, Travis Tankersley, Blake Taylor and Lacey Thibault and coaches Bonnie Stewart, Catherine Cantrell and Bob Myer.
