Powerlifters Qualify for
State
March 3, 2008
The Greenville
High School boys powerlifting team finished second in the
Region 3 Division 1 Meet at Paris High School, finishing
only behind the host school for the regional championship.
Three GHS
lifters qualified for the state meet in Abilene on March
29th by placing in the top two of their respective weight
classes.
Senior Spenser
Payne won the 181 lb. class with a total of 1,350 pounds,
while junior James Powers won the 114 pound title with a
880 lb. total. Senior Bennielee Shelby placed second
in the 242 lb. class with a 1,515 lb. total.
Senior Charles
Vinson placed third in the 148 lb. class with a 1,115 lb.
total while freshman Tevin Brookins claimed third in the
114 lb. class with a total of 815 pounds. Senior
Jamaine Hamilton also medaled with a 4th place finish in
the 165 lb. class with a 1,250 pound total.
Other regional
lifters included junior E.J. Prado (181 lb. class - 1,150
lb. total) and freshman Blake Hibdon (123 lb. class - 730
lb. total). Vinson added the title of best pound for
pound bench press in the 114-165 lb. classes with a lift
of 290 pounds.
The girls
powerlifting team attended the Region 3 Meet at Forney and
came away with three state qualifiers.
Senior Amber
Casselberry, junior Ashley Langston and freshman Brittany
Davis each had overall totals high enough in their
respective weight classes to qualify for the State Meet in
Killeen on March 15th.
Casselberry
squatted 295 lbs., benched 140 lbs. and deadlifted 340
lbs. to total 775 lbs. Langston squatted 190 lbs.,
benched 80 lbs. and deadlifted 225 lbs. to total 495 lbs.
while Davis squatted 320 lbs., benched 140 lbs. and
deadlifted 295 lbs. to total 755 lbs.
Freshman Shatoya
McMillan was a medalist by placing 5th in her weight class
with a 255 lb. squat, 115 lb. bench and a 235 lb. deadlift
to total 605 lbs. Junior Hannah Stuart also competed
and had a 240 lb. squat, 110 lb. bench and a 295 lb.
deadlift to total 645 lbs. The team placed 6th
overall in Class 4A.
